This piece is interesting, in that it shows how
these bone fragments accumulated in pockets. Within the pocket are
many bone fragments, all identified by their orange or brown color.
The Devonian
Columbus Limestone has several bone bed layers, however this one is the
most impressive. The bone bed layers are thought to be formed along a
marine shoreline, with pieces of freshwater, brackish, and marine fish
all broken up by wave action, then deposited all together.
Identification is difficult, many of these fish, described by Newberry,
are only known by these fragments! I WILL INCLUDE AN ARTICLE I PUBLISHED
THAT DESCRIBES THIS FASCINATING LAYER.
The specimen was professionally prepared by Marc Behrendt. There is
absolutely no restoration on the specimen or matrix.
Shipping will cost $5 anywhere in the USA.
