This large and beautiful
copal nugget contains 8 very well preserved termites All 4 sides have been polished,
though not perfectly in order not to harm any of the encased insect
fossils.
This is not amber, which is much
older than copal. The specimens exhibit small bubbles emanating from the
digestive tract. Once the termite was encased, the bacteria in its
gut continued to digest the wood, creating the gases that formed the
bubbles. |
